The Development of the Mudug Orphanage Centre
1. The need for a new Centre:
Himilo has been caring for orphans in Somalia; both in Galkayo and Mogadishu. As the conflict in Somalia prolonged, the number of the orphans in our care has unfortunately increased. The orphanage centre in Galkayo was overcrowded and the need for bigger centre became urgent. Amoud Foundation USA and Himilo paid for the land 5 km away from Galkayo in 2013. In September the construction of the first phase of the centre which will house around 200 orphans began.
2. The Well:
The construction of the well was key to the further development of the centre. The initial help for the well construction came from three young superstars sisters; Maryan, Safiya and Zaynab from London Ontario. www.facebook.com/MaryamSafiyaCleanWater. These sisters began raising money to build a well – a critical resource for not only locals, but also for the construction. They collected money and fundraising momentum built, and soon thereafter we had a combined pool of funds to begin digging a well. The digging of the well in the new Mudug Orphanage Centre started in October 2012 and was completed in April, 2013. The first and second attempts to dig the well failed. Finally, after digging 236 meters deep in our third attempt, we hit a large pool of water which filled the well. Now water levels have risen up to 80 meters below ground. In addition to the completion of the well, we have also constructed: two elevated water tank, a room for the generator, and ground container for the animals. A water pipe is extended to the village saving the women back and forth walking to the well.
The beneficiaries of this well are not only the orphans but also the people of the area. The well and the motor will supply water and electricity for the orphanage centre, and the people and livestock in the surrounding areas.

3. The school:
12 spacious class rooms, of which support was received from several donors to construct seven (7m X 5m) class rooms and their corridor, are now constructed and furnished. Another local NGO added four more classrooms to the school. Taking advantage of the prior school construction concepts, the Mudug Orphanage Centre was designed and built differently. The 'U shaped' school has bigger class rooms with higher ceilings (good for cooling) which gives the students more learning space.

7. The Fence:
The fence is very important for the security and safety of the orphanage. It was built around the finished areas of the school, dormitory, dining hall & kitchen, mosque, office building, library, laundry and security check point. This fence is 4 X 200 m (800m length x 2.5m height).

8. The School Bus:
Since MOC is 5 km away from Galkayo, a bus is purchased to carry some of the students back and forth from Al Sha’ab School and to carry food items for the orphans from Galkayo.

9. Garden:
The garden at the new Mudug Orphanage Centre in Haar Haar, we reserved a piece of land (100 m x 100 m) for a communal garden. The location of the orphanage is in a nomadic area, and has no contact or experience with farming or garden. We ran a small experiment and got some very encouraging results.
The objective of this project is:
a) To teach gardening skills;
b) To grow vegetables that will enrich their daily diet
c) To sell the excessive produce at the local market and
d) To show locals that gardening is possible and improves the lives of the community. The plan is to build four raised beds and grow tomatoes, salad, onions, cucumber, watermelon etc.

10. Garden for the houses:
The idea is to develop 18 small gardens (4 M X 9 M each); where kids can sit down in the afternoons to finish their homework. Our supporters and local volunteers have already started the work to finish the pathway and it is expected to be completed very soon. |

11. Library:
The library room will be 6m x 10 m. We hope to put as many books as possible for the orphans and an electronic server with more than 35,000 e-books. 12. Auditorium: The auditorium will be 9m x16m and will be adjacent to the library. The orphans will also be able to use as a quite reading space when not in use. The auditorium will be used as a gathering space for the students where they can watch documentaries, listen to seminars and workshops. It will also be used as a community meeting space. |
