Bandiiradley Orphanage
Himilo International Civic Development Agency contributed the first phase of the construction efforts composed of five classrooms, a Hall, a playground and a water tank. The on-site school is limited to primary levels due to a shortage of trained teachers in the community, and a severe funding deficit. For the foreseeable future, Bandiradley primary school graduates will go to Galkayo to attend high school.
Bandiiradlay village is located about 40 miles south of Galkayo and can be accessed by the main tarmac road that links the central regions with Mogadishu. The first phase of the orphanage centre was completed in February 2009. The Bandiradley community was affected largely by repeated local wars and prolonged draughts that disrupted the stability of the rural people in the zone. Relatively speaking, Bandiradley is a fast growing residential centre populated by internally displaced families, many orphans, and destitute parents who can hardly feed their children.
Currently we have three different types of children who attend the Bandiiradlay Orphanage, they are:
All 64 children attend the orphanage from the mornings to the late afternoon at which time their parent(s) will pick them up or the children will return to the orphanage housing compound.
Precarious health condition of children:
The children face malnutrition, diseases, lack of healthcare and inadequate living conditions. The adult population is not faring any better. A hospital located at the southern part of Galkayo (about 40 miles away) is the closest healthcare facility.
